When you search on Google for "dog food" you get a list of results from your search. It is the list of sites that have something to do with dog food. At the top and down the right side of your results you may also see Google ads that have been placed there by Google because the author of the ad wanted you to see it if you are interested in dog food. Therefore, "dog food" is a keyword for the ads you see on the right.
If you want to advertise something or to attract Google traffic to your site then you need to know and use keywords. They determine who sees your ads and who is sent to your page by Google. There are a lot of tools out there to discover the right keywords. Google will suggest them for free in the Adwords user interface. Or you can get larger lists from Wordtracker.com or Nichebot.com Another free tool is Keyword Discovery, a service that offers 100 results related to your original keyword. It's a great way to build a list of a few hundred keywords. Their paid service offers thousands of results. You can search for the first 100, pick out an interesting result or variation and get another 100 results that dig deeper. Continue this cycle and you can have 500 words pretty quickly. My favorite tool is Niche Inspector, a PC software application from Myleena Phan. It lets you find niche markets using data from Google, Yahoo and MSN at the same time. Try it by going to this page that describes Niche Inspector Wordtracker.com is a deep keyword database that will give you additional data for each keyword like number of searches in the last 90 days, KEI - the Keyword Effectiveness Index - a measure of how uncompetitive the word is, and other important facts. I had a subscription to Wordtracker, but I did not like the incredible number of keywords it would return that were obviously not real keywords. They collect all the junk as well as the real searches. I feel I can get along without Wordtracker due to Niche Inspector and the Wealthy Affiliate tool. We shall see. If you do try Wordtracker, a tool that does additional analysis of the Wordtracker material is KRA - Keyword Results Analyser - a PC software application that takes the Wordtacker data and filters it to find niches that are popular but not overcrowded with competitors. I don't use it very much due to a clumsy interface and better tools I can find elsewhere. Your mileage may vary. I'm sure someone has found it to be very useful. I would refer you again to the Wealthy Affiliate keyword tool, but that may be getting old by now. Their tool is part of the membership package. It does not return numbers but rather the relative values represented by Google bar graphs. That makes it rather crude if you like numbers. and you can get the same information directly from Google using their free tool. I tend to use Google to find relative values and to generate the list of keywords, then take that list into a real keyword program like Niche Inspector to get real numbers from Google, MSN and Yahoo. Then I have the data I need to pick keywords that have the right range of competition and serchers per month. All these tools try to use keyword data to find a niche - that is, a keyword group that has a lot of searches and not so many web sites competing for the traffic. If you find a niche, then you can build a web site around it to sell something or to build traffic to your page.
